“My Favorite Thunderstorm” is the third single from the FINAL BOSS album and the main event of the whole “Rain & Thunderstorm” suite.

Unlike “My Favorite Rain”, this is a pure solo guitar piece, and it is heavily inspired by the techniques of Preston Reed, one of my biggest guitar influences.

Most of the song is played using the over-the-neck technique, meaning that your left hand stays over the fretboard for much of the piece, performing two-handed tapping across the neck.

There are also some drumming parts which, for the most accurate sound, benefit from using my Schlagwerk FrameBuzz as a snare, though these sections can also be adapted easily for a standard guitar.

The bridge section, which many of you know as “My New Favorite Riff”, is one of the fan-favorite moments in the song.

To perform it exactly as I do, you would need two Keith Banjo Detuners on the top strings, as well as additional bridge detuning systems. Since I know that recreating a detunable bridge setup is not realistic for most guitars, I encourage you to find your own adaptation of that section using Keith Banjo Detuners and Timara String Drops wherever possible.

This is one of those metal pieces that is not extremely difficult to play technically, which allows you to focus more on the energy and groove.

The most important thing is to keep the rhythm steady and avoid rushing, since there is a natural tendency to speed up once the tapping patterns start to feel comfortable.

At the same time, the whole “thunderstorm” atmosphere should still feel dynamic and expressive, not robotic. I recommend listening closely to the album version to hear how I shape the dynamics, even within such a tapping-heavy context.

Throughout the piece, I also use the Digitech Whammy Ricochet here and there for quick pitch shifts. If you want to recreate the exact sound of the album version, this pedal is essential.

All detunings, drumming techniques, pedal effects, tapping parts, and fingerings are explained thoroughly throughout the tablature with detailed text notes. This is one of the most detailed tabs I’ve ever created.

The tablature is provided in Guitar Pro 7 and PDF formats, and the package also includes the album version of the track in WAV format.
